Once upon a time, I made a mockupery.
Dearest Reader,
Guess what....I got to do a thing! Every now and then I get a project that is a bit different from the norm and this was that day. I dipped my toe into the world of packaging: researching, pricing, and building a package option for a new digital solution.
Let me tell you a bit about the non-design part of the process. First, I googled. I googled quite a bit, actually. Then, I also googled. Am I impressing on you how very much I used the great Google of the web to find good resources for a box with inserts, in small quantities, at a reasonable rate? All I’m saying is, if you are looking for a new hobby, you could consider googling package creation.
After lots of the afore mentioned googling and follow up emailing activities, I settled on a number of resources to pitch. Leadership selected the very nice people at The Yebo Group to help us make our packaging dreams come true.
Then, lots of boring stuff happened so let’s fast-forward to the part where our first sample was delivered for review! It was....a plain white box.
A white box = not ideal
Hmmm. I knew I didn’t want to show our leadership team this sample as it was, since we planned to fully brand the package, so I decided it was time to get crafty.
I snap-chatted my mock up process and snagged that image sequence for you here. I give you...the art of the mock up.
The Mockup Design Process
You can see the “finished” piece is rough. It took me less than an hour to get the design elements printed and adhered, but it was such a well-spent hour as it allowed our leadership team to fully realize what the package will look like. The process helped us think through details like shipping multiple pens, where to add an address label, and more. Those little refinements delivered a solid brand experience and a worry-free first order.
We were really excited to receive our first order of branded packaging.
Tada! Our first package.
Oh, and Reader...did you find yourself wondering about the product for which I was designing this packaging? Try googling it.
